Ophthalmic Technician – Retina SpecialtyLocation: DeSoto, TX
Schedule: Monday–Friday
Employment Type: Full-Time
Pay Range: Competitive; based on experience and certificationPosition SummaryWe are seeking an experienced Ophthalmic Technician to join a fast-paced retina specialty practice in DeSoto, TX. Under the direction of physicians and clinical leadership, the Ophthalmic Technician provides advanced clinical and technical support, performs specialized diagnostic testing, and plays a key role in building accurate and complete patient medical records.This role is ideal for candidates with ophthalmology experience who are comfortable working in a high-volume retina environment and assisting with both diagnostic testing and in-office procedures.Key ResponsibilitiesClinical & Patient Care
  • Perform comprehensive patient workups, including obtaining medical history and chief complaints
  • Prepare patients for physician examinations, diagnostic testing, and in-office procedures
  • Maintain a calm, professional, and compassionate demeanor with patients experiencing vision loss or chronic eye conditions
  • Educate patients on procedures, testing, dilation effects, and post-visit expectations
Ophthalmic Testing & Diagnostics
  • Perform and document ophthalmic testing, including but not limited to:
    • Visual acuity testing
    • Intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement
    • Confrontational visual fields
    • Afferent pupillary defect (APD) testing
    • Extraocular movements (EOMs)
    • Amsler grid testing
    • Pupil dilation
  • Conduct advanced retinal diagnostic imaging:
    • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
    • Fundus photography
    • Fluorescein angiography (FA), as applicable
Procedural Support
  • Assist physicians with in-office retina procedures, including:
    • Laser procedures
    • Intravitreal and intraocular injections
  • Obtain and verify proper patient consent and documentation prior to procedures
  • Set up and prepare equipment, instruments, and examination rooms for procedures
Documentation & EMR
  • Accurately enter patient data, test results, and clinical findings into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) prior to physician evaluation
  • Ensure documentation is complete, timely, and compliant with clinic standards
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times
Clinic Operations & Compliance
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of clinical areas, including:
    • Exam rooms
    • Procedure rooms
    • Back-office areas
  • Sterilize and autoclave instruments according to protocol
  • Stock and restock examination rooms with required supplies
  • Comply with OSHA, HIPAA, and all clinic safety and regulatory policies
  • Properly dispose of contaminated materials and handle exposure to bloodborne pathogens according to protocol
Additional Responsibilities
  • Travel between clinic locations and/or surgery centers as needed
  • Coordinate additional testing or referrals at physician request
  • Cross-train for front office support as needed
  • Participate in continuing education and training to enhance ophthalmic and retina-specific skills
  • Support overall clinic workflow and assist with other duties as assigned
QualificationsRequired
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year ophthalmology experience preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume clinic
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Professional demeanor, strong work ethic, and reliability
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (approximately 85% of workday)
Preferred
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
  • Retina clinic experience
  • Experience with OCT, FA, and fundus photography
  • Ability to float between providers and assist multiple physicians
Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License and liability coverage (required)
  • Non-certified candidates may be required to obtain certification within a specified timeframe
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Clinical ophthalmology/retina practice environment
  • Standing and walking majority of the workday
  • Light physical effort, lifting up to 10 pounds
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and clinical equipment
