Job Description
Position Title: Technical Writer Department: Technical Communication Reports to: Technical Communications Manager Supervisory Responsibilities: No Purpose of Position: The Technical Writer will create and revise technical documents such as manuals, reports, brochures, or articles. Essential Functions and Responsibilities: • Writes and edits technical documents including reference manuals and product manuals as well as procedural documentation such as user guides and manuals that meets organizational standards. • Determines the type of publication that will best serve the project requirements (print, still photos, and/or video). • Meets with engineers, programmers, and project managers to learn about specific products or processes. • Researches product samples to fully understand product. • Assesses the audience needs for whom the technical and procedural documentation is intended; adjusts tone and technical terms used to meet those needs and to ensure understanding. • Plans writing processes and sets timelines and deadlines. Creates and maintains ongoing spreadsheet of projects with notes and approximate percentage completed for each one. • Creates or works with graphic designers to create diagrams, charts, and other visual aids to assist readers in understanding a product or process. • Evaluate current content and develop innovative approaches for improvement. • Develop and maintain detailed databases of appropriate reference materials, including research and design specifications. • Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: • High School diploma or equivalent is required. • Bachelor’s degree (BS/BA) is preferred. • Computer literacy intermediate/advance knowledge of MS Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Outlook, familiarity with Photoshop. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a keen eye for detail. • Excellent writing and grammatical skills. • Ability to present complex data in clear, concise text. • Ability to meet deadlines and to work independently. • Experience working with engineering to improve user experience: design, UI, and help refine content and create visuals and diagrams for technical support content.
